Cynthia Lynne Axne (;[one] née Wadle; built-in Apr 20, 1965) is an American businesswoman and politician serving as the U.South. representative from Iowa's third congressional commune since 2019. A member of the Autonomous Party, she defeated incumbent Republican David Young in the 2022 ballot. The district is anchored in the state uppercase, Des Moines; information technology includes much of the state's southwest quadrant, including Council Bluffs. Following the defeat of Abby Finkenauer and the retirement of Dave Loebsack from Congress, Axne became the sole Democrat in Iowa's delegation in 2021. She currently is the dean of Iowa'south delegation to the House of Representatives.

Early life and career [edit]

Axne was built-in in Thousand Rapids, Michigan, in 1965, the daughter of Terry and Joanne Wadle.[2] She graduated from Valley High School in Westward Des Moines, Iowa. She earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Iowa and a Primary of Business organization Administration from Northwestern University.[3]

Later on graduating from college, Axne worked in leadership evolution and strategic planning for the Tribune Company in Chicago. From 2005 through 2014, she worked in Iowa country government on service commitment in over 20 state agencies in the executive branch.[3]

Elections [edit]

During the 2022 elections, Axne ran for the United States House of Representatives in Iowa's 3rd congressional district.[four] [v]

Axne won the master ballot with 57.91% of the vote.[6] She defeated incumbent Representative David Young in the general election and became, along with Abby Finkenauer, one of the first 2 women from Iowa elected to the U.Due south. House of Representatives.[7] Immature carried 15 of the commune's 16 counties, but Axne won Polk County, the most populous county in the district and home to Des Moines, past over 30,000 votes, far exceeding the overall margin of 8,000.[8]

Axne won the Democratic chief virtually unopposed, only running against write-in candidates.[ix] She so went up confronting David Young in a rematch during the general election and narrowly won with 48.9% of the vote compared to Young's 47.six%.[ten]

Axne is running for reelection in the 2022 elections.[11]

Tenure [edit]

Axne took office amidst the 2018–2019 U.s. federal government shutdown and requested that her pay exist withheld until the shutdown ended.[12] On January 30, 2019, Axne co-sponsored a bill to foreclose future federal government shutdowns from happening; the bill was titled Shutdown to Stop All Shutdowns (SEAS) Act.[13]

As of November 2021, Axne had voted in line with Joe Biden's stated position 100% of the fourth dimension.[14]

Controversies [edit]

In September 2021, Rep. Axne was accused of declining to disclose up to $645,000 in stock trades co-ordinate to The Campaign Legal Eye. [18] Reports as well institute that Axne was buying and selling stocks in companies she was tasked to oversee with her position on the House Financial Services Committee. [19]

Personal life [edit]

Axne and her husband John currently operate a digital design firm. They have two teenage sons and live in West Des Moines.[three] Axne and her family are members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Westward Des Moines.

Axne is 6 feet (1.83 thou) tall.[20]
