How to Draw The Solar System – Let's Get Started!

Step 1drawing solar system step 1

The sun is the center of our universe, but for this guide on how to draw the solar system it will be drawn on the side of the picture.

This will be so that we can show off the planets later on in the guide. To begin, start off with a curved line in the corner of the picture.

Once you have drawn this round line, you can then draw a jagged, pointy line along the perimeter of it with lots of points on it for the rays of the sun.

With that done, it's time for step 2 of the guide!

Step 2 – Next, draw the first three planets of the solar systemdrawing solar system step 2

With the sun drawn, we can now start on the first planets of the solar system.  For now, we will be drawing the first three planets.

When drawing these planets we will be using some perfect circles which can be a bit challenging to do freehand.

There are a few tools that you can use to make it easier on yourself. The best tool to use is a drawing compass, as this allows you to easily draw some perfect circles using your pen or pencil.

Once you have drawn these three planets as they appear in the reference image, you can draw the details for Earth by drawing some visible continents.

Step 3 – Draw two more planets for the solar systemdrawing solar system step 3

We will be adding two more planets in this part of our guide on how to draw a solar system. First, you can draw one more fairly small circle for the next planet.

The planet after that will be Saturn, and this planet looks a bit different due to the large ring circling it.

Simply draw a large circle with two gaps on the side, and then finish it off with the rings using some rounded lines. Once it looks like our reference image then it's on to part 4!

Step 4 – Now, draw another planet along with some more detaildrawing solar system step 4

This part of your solar system drawing will be about adding one more planet along with some details for the other ones. First, we will draw Jupiter.

This will be the largest of all the circles, seeing as it's the largest planet in our solar system. Once the circle is drawn, you can then draw some line details onto the planet to give it some surface detail.

Before moving on, you can also add some dot detailing to the two nearest planets. Once these aspects are complete, we have a few final details to add in the next step of the guide.

Step 5 – Finish off the final details of your solar system drawingdrawing solar system step 5

To conclude this guide on how to draw the solar system, before you start adding some color to your artwork we need to add three more planets to the image.

Two of these will be fairly large, with one having another ring around it. Finally, we will finish off with one more small circle.

It's generally considered that Pluto isn't classified as a true planet, but it's still part of our solar system regardless.

You can finish off by adding some line details to the other planet you drew, and then you're ready for the final step!

There are some fun extra details that you could add before moving on to the final part, however. You could change some of the details while adding or removing certain planets to create your own unique solar system.

You could also add some smaller details such as stars or even creative ones like flying alien spaceships.

These are just a few ideas that you could try out, but what else can you think of to finish this solar system drawing off?

Step 6 – Finish off your solar system drawing with some colordrawing solar system step 6

The various planets in the solar system are all distinct in how they look as well as their coloring. We will finish off your solar system drawing by adding these colors now.

In our reference image, we have shown you the colors you can use for a more accurate look. You don't have to keep it accurate, though! If you prefer, you could also use some of your own color choices for the various planets instead.

Once you have chosen the colors you would like to use, you can also have fun picking which art mediums and tools you will use to bring them to life.

One fun idea would be to do a wash of black paint for the background while using brighter mediums for the planets themselves.

We will be very curious to see how you choose to finish off your solar system drawing!
